Jena the fairy godmother wondered what the dragon was doing. She decided to pay him a visit, and found him lazing about in the sunshine next to a big river. "Dragon, have your forgotten someone?"
The dragon opened one invisible eye and peered at Jena. "I know, I know, I'm a lousy dragon-father. I'm not really sure what he needs from me..."
Jena had been to visit Ryn and his parents recently, darting here and there around the house, making sure they had all the magic they needed in their lives. "Do you know, dragon, his real parents are very, very human. And most of the time, they are not sure what he needs. But they keep loving him, and holding him, and sharing what it means to be human with him." She felt the invisible wings of the dragon lift around her, and she knew he was about to fly somewhere. "What are you going to do, my invisible friend?"
The dragon told her the truth. "I'm not really sure..."
The dragon flew over their house, near the mountain. As he approached he saw Ryn's father riding away from the house, with a look of deep concentration on his face.
The dragon called to the soul of the boy. "Ryn, come with me." While the boy slept, a little light rose from in his body. The light floated to the dragon, and settled on his shoulder, nestling into a wing. "Let's see what your father is up to..."
The dragon and the boy flew above David, who was powering down many miles on his bike, training and growing stronger. Ryn was amazed be the strength in his father's body. David was always so gentle and loving when he held his son. The man on the bike was aggressive and forceful, pure energy in motion. They watched him sweating out the distance, up hills and down into valleys, further and further.
While they flew the dragon felt something in the boy's soul, like a force. Energy in motion. Inspired by his father's strength, the boy's soul appeared to grow wings of light, and flew. The dragon was surprised, not sure what to do. He flew close, ensuring the boy would never fall. A few moments later the boy settled again, back into the dragon's shoulder. They flew on, until they had followed David back to the house.
The dragon hovered. "Time to return, my..." What should he call him? "Time to return, little dragon boy."
Ryn's light floated back to his sleeping body, just in time to hear his father enter the house. David was still breathing heavily, exhausted after his ride. He heard his son cry out as he opened the door. "What have you been up to, little man?"
