Jena the fairy godmother was flitting in and around everyone at the picnic on the mountain by a river, near a city. The people had gathered to celebrate Ryn's first birthday, and to enjoy the day together.
His mother chatted about the boy. "He's a beautiful child, he shows me the way to go, and we just enjoy the ride together…"
Jena kept a careful watch over the proceedings, to make sure that the boy's life was filled with magic and beautiful people and things. That's what fairy godmothers do.
Later that evening Ryn's parents lay him down to rest. His father cooed him to sleep. "Are you ready for your dragon flight, little man?"
Jena called to the dragon, who had been waiting until after the party. She spoke with her beautiful piano-tinkling voice. "Where will you take him today, great dragon?"
The dragon looped-the-loop around her. "I'm not sure, gentle fairy."
He hovered over the house, and without a word a light rose from Ryn's sleeping body, and settled on the dragon's shoulders. Lately the dragon could feel where Ryn wanted to fly. He would hover a moment, and Ryn would pull in whatever direction. They flew around the mountain, where the shadows were growing long at the end of the day. The dragon hovered a moment, and Ryn pulled toward the river. They flew along the river, toward the city. As they approached the tall buildings, Ryn pulled left and right, and they zoomed in and out of buildings, along streets and over gardens. The dragon hovered a moment to catch his breath, with Ryn pulling this way and that, impatient to continue. They soared out over the river again toward the sea, and looped-the-loop around great bridges. The dragon landed on one of the islands beyond the coastline for them to watch the sun set together. Then, in the twilight, they flew homewards. The dragon hovered over the house as the light from Ryn's soul descended back into his body.
While the dragon lingered over the house, Jena appeared and spoke again. "Where did you take him? What did you do together?"
The dragon hovered and thought for a moment before replying. "He's a beautiful child, he shows me the way to go, and we just enjoy the ride together…"
